Tuka – Feedback Loop (Out Today)

25 10 2012

One third of triple j hip hop fave’s Thundamentals, for MC Tuka, the past twelve months have been relentless. No sooner had Thundamentals release their highly acclaimed second album Foreverlution in July last year that, in-between a hectic Thunda’s touring schedule, Tuka was already “working day and night” on what would emerge as his sophomore solo LP Feedback Loop.

Picking up where 2010’s Will Rap For Tuka left off, Feedback Loop is Tuka’s 2nd solo long player and is in Stores Oct 26th through Big Village / Creative Vibes. The first two singles to be lifted from Feedback Loop – Just To Feel Wanted and Die A Happy Man (featuring the classiest lady in Australian hip hop, Jane Tyrrell) – have both already been placed on full triple j rotation as well as cutting up airwaves across all key community radio nationally.

Feedback Loop, admits Tuka, had him working at unprecedented levels. “It’s left me spiritually, emotionally, physically and financially exhausted and is easily the biggest project I’ve ever had to be solely responsible for. It’s the biggest gamble of my life, creatively; I feel like I’ve really pushed myself.”

On Feedback Loop Tuka teamed up with Inner West Sydney’s Sleepers Awake to create a consistent sonic landscape. “We have been able to really fine tune a specific ‘sound’ that has been applied not only to the beats and songs that we’ve created but also to the guest producers I worked with.”

Ruminating on the album title and content, Tuka muses: “Feedback Loop is an album that is completely up for interpretation. I know that seems like a cop out, but the theme is actually about my interpretation of the world, and our society; [how my] interpretation can feedback into where it came from. I will no doubt take the feedback I get from this release, and thus the cycle repeats itself.

Seven days after the album was completed, Tuka hit the road as headliner on Sydney hip hop collective Big Village’s national label tour to launch their second label compilation album Big Things Vol 2.  Official launches for  Feedback Loop will go down in late November.

Tuka – Die A Happy Man feat. Jane Tyrrell

15 10 2012

Feedback Loop’s second single Die A Happy Man featuring The Herd’s Jane Tyrrell is the calm before the storm. A charming, nostalgic head-nodder in the vein of Portishead, it’s had fans champing at the bit for more of the creative MC’s clever wordplay and lyrical patterns.

After the instant impact at radio of the single  Just To Feel Wanted, Thundamentals MC Tuka launches his second solo album Feedback Loop this November with select shows in Sydney, Melbourne and hometown Katoomba. Not afraid to lean on all of his influences, mix them up and present something completely new, Just To Feel Wanted’s catchy, almost Gnarls Barkely feeling was just a small taste of what is to come on Feedback Loop, a record that is leaps and bounds ahead of his solo debut Will Rap For Tuka, sonically, lyrically, stylistically and… pretty much every way you look at it.

Having toured Australia a few times over with Thundamentals on stages like Sydney’s Enmore Theatre or Hi Fi and Luna Park’s Big Top (Come Together) and most recently Big Sound, Tuka is as at home in front of a couple of hundred as he is in front of a few thousand. He’s developed his performance style to be comfortable handling the stage on his own or as part of an ensemble (as seen with the Big Village tour and the upcoming Thundamentals with live horns tour). His captivating style ranges from playful to menacing, sometimes all in the one song.

Tuka’s – Feedback Loop has got singles for days and the first two at radio may just throw you for a loop as there are still so many styles to uncover. From Moroder-esque synths to swirling symphonies, raw rock dynamics and cutting edge electronica, Feedback Loop has got it all. Don’t miss Tuka as he performs these intimate shows ahead of what is going to be a very busy Summer for the solo MC as well as his group Thundamentals.

Tuka – Will Rap For Tuka (Out Now) + Free Download

18 11 2010

After years of humbly impressing Australian audiences as a member of Thundamentals, Rumpunch and Sketch The Rhyme, it’s now time for emcee Tuka to step to the fore and distinguish himself as one of the country’s most exciting lyrical talents. As comfortable rocking over a stomping Gypsy horn line as he is over Dub-Reggae or a driving Boom Bap rhythm. Tuka’s debut LP Will Rap For Tuka is the culmination of years honing his craft, both in written form and performance and delivers one of 2010’s most diverse efforts right before the buzzer sounds.
With only two guests on the entire album (Tenth Dan and Radical Son), Tuka really has wholeheartedly taken on the ‘solo’ mantle, with even the cover art being hand drawn by the Sydney emcee. Production comes from Mike Silk, Marz1, DJ Morgs, Brokn, Caustic and Tuka himself.

Your next favourite Emcee-Producer, Tuka’s debut solo set eschews easy comparison and overtly big singles (with the exception of Pro), instead opting for cerebral Jazz and Dub influenced head nodders that tip their hat to producers and projects like early RJD2, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Soul Assasins Volume 1 or Nightmares On Wax.
A veteran of the scene, Tuka has played everywhere from Woodford Festival and Sydney Festival’s First Night, to iconic venues The Hordern, The Metro and The Palace Theatre. His approach is both highly melodic and rhythmic in nature, and freestyle comes as naturally as composition – he regularly performs entirely improvised sets, and as a host of triple J’s National Open Mic and guest on FBi’s Stolen Records, he has showcased that ability over national radio more than once or twice. When not on stage or making music, Tuka is a teacher for the NSW TAFE Outreach Program, teaching hip-hop to disadvantaged youth to improve their literacy by encouraging them to express themselves creatively as individuals.

His work with Thundamentals has lead to critical acclaim, from Sydney Morning Herald dubbing them “one of the Top 10 live acts to watch in 2010“, to triple J’s Dom Alessio hailing them “one of the more exciting Aussie hip hop outfits to emerge in the past few years”, Rolling Stone and MTV labeling them one of the top up and coming Aussie acts and iTunes after naming The Mash iTunes Single of the Week, Thundamentals were invited to record an exclusive live EP for fans and competition winners at Sydney’s iTunes store.

Tuka has had the privilege of playing alongside some of the finest local and international acts – to give you a taste, think A Tribe Called Quest (USA), Lyrics Born (USA), Kool Herc (USA), Q-bert (USA), Braintax (UK), Mystro (UK), DJ MK (UK), Supernatural, The Herd, The Red Eyes, Rastawookie, Bliss n Eso, Muph & Plutonic, Chasm, Urthboy, Koolism, Astronomy Class, Pegz, Spit Syndicate, Delta and many more. A collaborator of the highest order, he has worked and recorded with Dialectrix, Two Toes, Chasm and The Tongue.

Tuka’s Will Tap For Tuka is out now through Big Village Records.
You can also catch Tuka in the upcoming Rappertag.
