Interview: G-Shock 30th Anniversary Bash

22 04 2013

Last week G-Shock Australia kicked off its 30th Anniversary Celebration at the Prince Ballroom in Melbourne’s St Kilda. Bliss N Eso, DJ Krush and Yo Mafia hit the stage in a private concert for VIP guests. The venue was decked out with limited G-Shock watches and a collection of watches dating back to 1983. G-Shock also announced its first collaboration for the Australian market with local Hip-hop artists Bliss N Eso

We catch up with Bruno, Marketing Manager for Casio Timepiece, as we discuss 30 successful years in the industry.

aahh: What does an anniversary such as this, 30 years in the market, mean to brand G-Shock?
Bruno: To put it simply – 30 years for a fashion brand not only means longevity – it also means credibility. You can’t be around for three decades without doing something right.
The anniversary party gave us a chance to reflect on the past and look towards the future. Walking around the room it was incredible to be reminded of G-Shock’s knack for innovation. There was a G-Shock that took your blood-pressure … there was one with a built-in pokie machine … there was also one that did Morse code! This year G-Shock just came out with their Bluetooth model … it basically hooks up to your iPhone and lets you know when people are calling you, emailing you and hitting you up on social media. If that isn’t innovation – I don’t know what is!

IMG_7892

aahh: To celebrate the 30th anniversary, there have been numerous parties worldwide. Australia’s launch went down in Melbourne. Why was it important to celebrate this event worldwide?
Bruno: Although G-Shock’s are designed by Japanese-based engineers – it’s always been important to make G-Shock a global brand rather than a region-specific brand. The guys at our head-office in Tokyo are good when it comes to giving every country creative control. They basically say – “you understand your own market better than we do – so go nuts.”
A G-Shock party in Italy – for example – is a lot different from a G-Shock party in Australia. I was watching some of the footage from the Italian party – people were sitting down at tables and politely eating dinner with knives and forks … good on them – that’s there scene. Here in Australia – though – our party was about live-music, scoffing down food and having (quite a few) drinks.

IMG_7858

aahh: G-Shock have constantly been a leader in fashion for men’s watches. What is it about the brand that you think has led to its success over the past 30 years?
Bruno:
I reckon that G-Shock’s success over the past 30-years can be put down to innovation. I don’t know any other brand that’s constantly coming up with new models and taking risks when it comes to danger. It seems that every month G-Shock is announcing new concepts and collaborations. Last week I did the maths – since ’83, G-Shock have released a watch every 6.7 days … crazy, right?

aahh: A number of special releases are being brought out in celebration of this milestone. One that caught our eye was a collaboration with Shoe maker Supra. Can you tell us a bit about this?
BrunoA month ago I was in Japan and they showed me the GA200SPR (which is the fancy technical way of referring to the G-Shock x Supra model). It’s one of the most stunning watches I’ve ever seen. Those designers at Supra and G-Shock came up with a winner of watch.
Here in Australia we’ll be getting about 70 of them next month.

IMG_7816

aahh: There are a number of musical performances announced to play in Melbourne at the 30th anniversary bash? What relationship does the brand share with musical creatives?
Bruno:
G-Shock has always had a very close relationship with music. In the US – G-Shock enjoys a close relationship with Eminem and the Wu-Tang Clan. In the UK it’s with Coldplay. Here in Australia – we’re pumped to be aligned with Bliss n Eso.
Whether designing a watch or putting an album together – you’re using the same creative-side of your brain – that’s why G-Shock shares a special bond with artists.

IMG_8415

aahh: What other ways are G-Shock marking this historic event for the label, we hear possible news of the first ever Australian Collaboration?
Bruno:
Absolutely. We’ll soon be taking the boys from Bliss n Eso to Japan … they’ll be sitting down with our top engineers and designing their very own watch. This has never been done in Australia before – so we’re all extremely pumped about finally being able to do this.
The watch will come up in early 2014 and will be limited to 1,000 pieces.
I grew up as a huge fan of Bliss n Eso. I remember sitting under the Indooroopilly bridge in Brisbane, listening to the Culture of Kings compilation on my minidisc player and having this light bulb moment where I was like “these boys get it.” Fast-forward a few years, when it came time for G-Shock to formally align itself with a group – it was a no-brainer. These boys are innovators and creatively brilliant.

Childish Gambino – BDO Side Shows

20 11 2012

With a unique blend of hip-hop spanning multiple genres, combined with a lyrical genius, Childish Gambino has gone from a viral cult following to a mega sensation. This summer the wunderkind makes his Australian debut when he plays Big Day Out.

Childish Gambino is the triple threat of entertainment – actor, writer and rapper – who “just oozes with talent” (Consequence Of Sound). Born Donald Glover, he raps and performs under the persona of Childish Gambino, a name created randomly via an online Wu-Tang Clan name generator. He doesn’t exactly have the stereotypical hip-hop backstory as he originally started off selling laughs as a writer for the NBC comedy hit show 30 Rock. His acting career blew up next and his role as Troy on the current NBC comedy Community, drew accolades. “I knew that because of 30 Rock and Community, people will find out I’m a comedian before they know I do music,” says Childish Gambino. “But I’ve been doing music long before any of that.

Childish Gambino has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in music with the video for his track Freaks and Geeks hitting over 10 million YouTube views. He’s been famed for rhyming over indie grooves such as the likes of Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend, and Sufjan Stevens and other times, Childish Gambino just dazzles with insane, complex pop-culture references.

Not one to be pigeonholed, he recently released his latest mixtape Royalty featuring collaborations with Beck, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and Ghostface Killah and 30 Rock star and comedian Tina Fey. Live Childish Gambino is backed by arrangements that span indie-rock toddle, lowrider-shaking hip-hop grind, and doo-wop all showcasing his fiercely clever flow. Bear witness to rap marvel Childish Gambino and his explosive live show that will be the talk of the town. These shows are your only chance to see Childish Gambino outside of Big Day Out 2013. Tickets on sale 9am Thursday November 22 here

You can pick up Childish Gambino’s latest mixtape ROYALTY here.

Wu-Tang Clan Australian tour

6 06 2011

Emerging in the mid 90s, New York City’s Wu-Tang Clan proved to be one of the decade’s most intense, popular and revolutionary rap groups selling millions of albums worldwide. The nine-MC Clan is considered one of the most critically and commercially successful hip-hop groups of all time, and rose to fame with their uncompromising brand of music. Not only was the group extremely successful as a collective, many individuals within the Clan went on to become solo stars in their own right.

Within the inner sanctum of the Wu, dwell the core members of the clan consisting of Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Rza, U-God, Masta Killa, Gza and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. For the very first time, Australian fans will get to see the ENTIRE CLAN on stage together, minus RZA who is unavailable to tour. Plus, local promoters OPP are excited to announce that standing in for the late Ol Dirty Bastard is the charismatic rapper’s son Boy Jones aka Young Dirty, who has honed his own skills to be stage-ready to perform with the legendary act. This same line-up recently toured the US and saw the Wu perform tracks off their seminal debut, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), plus tracks off various other solo and collective albums. The three-city tour kicks off in Sydney on the 5th August, with shows also scheduled in Melbourne and Perth.

Joining Wu on their tour in Melbourne and Sydney is Phaze One. International collaborations are rare enough, but rarely does the world get a chance to admire the creative output of two such overbearing characters as Aria Award winning M-Phazes (Australia) and Emilio Rojas (US). Together they are Phaze One. Both have enjoyed considerable solo success with M-Phazes’s debut album Good Gracious having recently powered through the Australian Charts, and Emilio Rojas being described by DJ Green Lantern as one of America’s most anticipated up and coming artists. His successful string of mixtapes have seen him collaborate with artists such as Yelawolf, B.o.B, Styles P and a whole stable of other influential musicians. Their self-titled album Phaze One is due for release June 25th.

Local support in Perth is Golden Era Records artist Vents hailing from Adelaide. In 2007 he released his critically acclaimed debut album Hard To Kill. In 2011 he returns with an album four years in the making. Having toured the country extensively playing festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Summadayze and Groove in the Park, his hard hitting lyrical content combined with some of Australia’s finest production has earned him a place as one of Australia’s most respected MC’s. Marked For Death is available now and features Trials and Funkoars handling production duties, plus label mates Sesta and Hilltop Hoods adding guest vocals. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Gza, U-God, Masta Killa, DJ Allah Mathematics, DJ Street Life and Young Dirty altogether on one stage.

12 01 2011

This is the official film clip for This Is, the lead single off Prophet Rayza’s (QLD) debut EP Six Books. Released November 12th 2010 on Born Fresh Records and distributed nationally by MGM.

For ten years now Prophet Rayza has been a stronghold in the Australian Hip Hop scene perfecting his talents across the four elements of Hip Hop as an emcee, breakdancer, graffiti artist and beatboxer. His passion for the art form stems from his first train trip from Brisbane to Melbourne at five years of age, when he first saw graffiti and told his mother when he grew up that he would do it too.
