World renowned UK rap legend, Blak Twang, will hit The Espy on Friday 14th February for a free entry show! Twang is synonymous with the British hip hop scene and has earned international recognition, including the MOBO award, a nomination in the USA’s prestigious Source magazine awards for ‘Best International Hip Hop Act’ and a nomination for Best British Hip Hop Artist in BET’s Awards.
His formative years were spent playing football and listening to the “golden age” rap sounds. He started to seriously consider pursuing his rhyming abilities when he heard the London Posse’s epochal single ‘Money Mad’, and discovered that rap could give you the freedom to speak in your own voice, not one borrowed from New York.
Twang’s career got underway with the release of his third album, ‘Kik Off’, on which he blended metaphors from the football field with rap and production skills honed over a decade of active participation in Hip Hop culture. The record established him as a mainstream star with tracks such as the anthemic ‘So Rotton’ becoming Twang’s theme song.
Following on from ‘Kik Off’, the rapper released two successful albums ‘The Rotton Club’ (2005) and ‘Speaking From Experience’ (2008). Showcasing rhymes that deal with unsafe sexual practices and travel, to defending rap music from Government officials. Most recently Twang launched the ‘Badda Dan Dat’ EP in 2013, which featured the single by the same name and remixes from drum n’ bass artists Run Tingz Cru, Serial Killaz and Terrahawk.
Part of this widespread appeal is easily explained the second you see a Blak Twang show: where other rap stars may offer a desultory plod through some loping beats, live performance has always been at the heart of what Twang is about, and his records have been made with live stage shows in mind. Over the past decade, Twang’s music has taken him all around the world and has garnered him the reputation of a hard-working touring musician. Now it is Melbourne’s chance to see the British rapper live when he stops by the Espy.
