‘Second Heartbeat’, featuring Sampa the Great & Okenyo is Urthboy’s follow-up single to ‘Long Loud Hours’, and it’s an autobiographical charmer, delivered with the warm charisma of Summer.
Opening with the sound of kids cheering and screaming with delight, we are invited into a nostalgic celebration and a major clue as to the concept of Urthboy’s upcoming album. From there the upbeat piano and soulful beauty of Okenyo’s introduction takes us to a place where the past meets the present. The three singers take us on a journey of their lives, their lineage and the way their backgrounds inform their music.
Joining Urthboy’s breezy reflections is Sampa The Great, one of the breakthrough artists of 2015, as her effortless flow focuses on the sacrifices her family made for her to pursue music. Okenyo’s leftfield soul is genuine and joyful, her voice alluring as she joins Urthboy in a glorious gospel chorus.
Reminiscent of the wide-eyed ‘Shruggin’, although produced by rising star Nic Martin, there’s something so easy and undeniably bright about this song.
Second Heartbeat is taken from Urthboy’s upcoming album, and will be available on February 3rd through Elefant Traks / Inertia
