Having solidified their place at the top of Australia’s soul and hip-hop spectrum, well-loved Melbourne duo REMI return with their latest infectious single & video “My People”, featuring the powerhouse vocals of Zimbabwean-born songstress Thando – out today on their own label imprint, House of Beige Records.
Effortlessly smooth and brimming with gusto, “My People” matches Remi Kolawole’s free flowing rhymes, and Sensible J’s eclectic percussion with Thando’s soulful voice, all the while coasting along with an undeniable groove. Directed by Baro, the accompanying visuals sees REMI surrounded by family & friends – their people – and is a dynamic, technicolour treat for sore eyes.
The video was shot in collaboration with iconic streetwear house, Champion who have a rich connection to hip hop culture. Champion have launched a new music program titled ‘Revealed’ with REMI being the first artist to collaborate with the brand on the initiative.
“My People” is a celebration of the people closest to Remi, who highlights “The most beautiful thing about this song, is that it was about family and I got to create it with family. Sensible J, as always, blessed the production. Its forever inspiring when those closest to you just get better and better. Then J and I got to link with Thando on the vocals. She is so dope, her skill, energy and mind are on another level. So lucky to have worked together. And finally my brothers Yusuf Harare and Hussein did some sneaky harmonies, adlibs and the intro for the joint. So now when I hear the track all I can hear is fam”.
Enhancing the family affair visually came as an honour for Melbourne MC Baro who adds “I just wanted to showcase my beautiful family whilst centering diversity and blackness in this film clip, which is rarely done in this country. Make it just a wholesome celebration of the song the guys made which was a sonic celebration in itself”.
“My People” marks the first new music since REMI’s phenomenal 2016 sophomore record Divas and Demons, which featured some of Australia’s brightest artists including AMP-winner Sampa The Great on “For Good” and Jordan Rakei on the beautiful “Lose Sleep”. The triple j feature & ARIA nominated album gained widespread critical acclaim and deservedly became the duo’s first official ARIA Top 10 record.
Maintaining a busy live schedule, REMI have since sold-out headline tours across Europe & Australia, and shared stages with the likes of with Joey Bada$$, Danny Brown & De La Soul. With features across outlets such as OkayPlayer, Majestic Casual, COLORS, Billboard, NME, NPR, winning the 2014 AMP for their debut record Raw X Infinity and shout outs from the likes of hip-hop luminaires Chuck D & Big Boi (Outkast), REMI’s appeal is as diverse as it is impressive.
