‘Stay With Us’ Represents A Bold Change Of Direction For Joey Maker

Joey Maker returns with Stay With Us, an upbeat new wave hip-hop track released on the 9th of July. Stay With Us follows Joey’s debut EP, Barbershop Stories, which gained national momentum, landing singles on triple j and community stations around the country.

Stay With Us shows Joey’s versatility and progression. Over the synth-acoustic hybrid production of Bondi hit maker DeliPres (imbi the girl, Coast & Ocean), Joey recounts memories from nights on the town, keeping the subject matter attuned with the poppy instrumentation while still always layering in his introspective thoughts. OWLBB adds his dreamy vocals as a contrast over the acoustic chorus.

“I’ll be going going gone / Never look back at my shadow, I tell her so long” Joey says in the second verse, repeating the line as if to convince himself of its truth. OWLBB joins in the chorus to reflect on the impact that his choices have: “I know I may be lost / I guess we paid the cost, paid the cost”. With a sound reminiscent of Jaden Smith, Stay With Us represents a bold change of direction for Joey Maker and an exciting new entry for modern Australian hip-hop.

Recently completing an East Coast tour with frequent collaborators 4Fins (Johniepee, Martian, Clue) including a headline slot at Oxford Art Factory main room, Joey Maker is next set to hit the stage in Sydney supporting Detroit legends Obie Trice and Swifty of D12, before touring the rest of Australia in the second half of the year.
