In the lead up to the release of his anticipated second album The Chase, Melbourne MC Illy has launched ‘14 Tracks in 14 Days’. What is 14 Tracks in 14 Days you ask? Commencing last Friday the 15th of October. Illy will be uploading 1 track per day off his new album The Chase for streaming via his official website www.illyal.com
Each track will be accompanied by a detailed description of the song, sharing exclusive details like the meanings behind the songs through to the recording process. This is intended to give fans not only an in-depth insight into the album, but also an idea of the overall flow of the record. Below you can find out what Illy had to say about Day 5’s track Cigarettes. You can check the track out here.
Day 5 – Track: ‘Cigarettes’
Phazes first showed me this beat at the Bunbury Groovin The Moo. We’d been touring flat out for about 2 months up till this show, and this was the last big show we played together, so it was a kind of bittersweet thing. Phizzle, Cam (my drummer – HandiCam, Cameroon, Camdle, Camoron) and myself were in our room, and Phazes chucked that beat on. I lost my shit straight away.
It’s not a typical hip-hop sounding beat, which I loved from first listen. It’s got an almost pop feel, but those drums dirty the whole feel of the track up perfectly. I took a bit of inspiration from the movie The Wrestler, in that the song is about someone who falls from grace, and as crazy and futile as it might be, cant let go of their dream, whatever the consequences are as a result. The beat was originally a much more down-tempo track, and the original verses reflected that – there was a sense of hopelessness, where matey’s stuck in a downward spiral he’ll never get out of.
I’d planned on having a female vocal for the hook, but after the beat got changed, a chick wouldn’t have suited. Hue was my first choice male vocal for the hook; I knew him through his band The Melodics, he’s got a really unique voice, and it suited the track perfectly. He came in at 10am on a Monday session, and was out by midday with the hook bodied.
