Anticipation for Ngaiire’s debut LP Lamentations is rapidly building in the wake of first single Dirty Hercules, the fierce song that propelled the diminutive Sydney-via-Papua New Guinea artist around the nation during March and April.
Now, the formidable creative force – and face of future soul in Australia – is proud to announce the release of second single Around – a piece of music that once again represents Ngaiire’s unique diversity, taste and extraordinary talent. Around muses upon the appeal of having someone fight for you, delving into the relentless push and pull of relationships when one shoulders more than the other. It deconstructs love as an equally thankless operation and a reckless act of surrender to another’s cause questioning each others strengths, motives, and ability to find hope in the hopeless.
As with Dirty Hercules, Around’s characteristically questioning lyrics – expand on Ngaiire’s natural inquisitiveness into relationships and human behaviour, however with its ethereal production and delicate vocal lines it presents a contrasting aesthetic when compared with the album’s lead single further more reflecting her distinctive writing style with Japan based collaborator and pianist Aaron Choulai and Sydney producer and bassist Tim Curnick.
Ngaiire has been building a reputation for herself as one of the country’s most recognisable and dynamic artists since being named alongside Kimbra, Lanie Lane, and The Jezabels in triple j’s 2010 Next Crop list. Since then Ngaiire has moved to Sydney after a brief stint studying for a Jazz degree at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, embarked on a long period of touring overseas and in Australia with roots collective Blue King Brown, mentor and electronic maestro Paul Mac and gypsy jazz outfit Monsieur Camembert.
Journeying from folk soul to jazz hop to indie pop to everything in between, Ngaiire has finally settled on an eclectic sonic identity that is uniquely hers and one that can easily transcend universal territories with its electronic soul elements as well as gratify the folk sphere with her great adoration for storytelling and heartfelt laments.
Despite having already exhibited an incredible level of determination and resilience – between the car accident which left her with spinal fractures a day before recording to the death of a close relative upon the album’s completion – it is Ngaiire’s inimitable style, natural creativity and divine song craft that have her on track to bring future soul movements to their knees, worldwide.
