Sketch the Rhyme is a hip-hop – live art game show created and based in Sydney’s inner west. The show, inspired by things like Mr. Squiggle and Pictionary, is made up of a series of playoffs and games between artists, rappers and a live band. The Artists speed-sketch pictures relevant to a theme or topic, MCs then freestyle their response in rhyme, whether its improvising a story or guessing the catch-phrase.
Sketch the Rhyme have just announced 3 very special shows as part of the Sydney fringe festival. One show is at quirky Marrickville live music venue Camelot on Friday 20th September with two all ages shows for kids and adults alike slated in at the Sound Lounge, Seymour Centre Friday 27th September – 11am and 1pm respectively.
Regular Sketch MCs Jeswon (Thundamentals), P.Smurf and Rapaport will be performing along with Sketch artists Claire Nakazawa, Sam Clouston, Mie Nakazawa, Edgar Bodley and Paul Gilsenan. More guests artists and supports are also to be announced.
Sketch has already had a very busy 2013 – February saw them perform at the famous Spiegeltent @ Melbourne Art Centre, March saw them play 15 shows in 13 days at the Adelaide Fringe (and receive a weekly theatre award). Then there was The Rock Windmill festival in April, a tour to Snowy Mountains Music Festival, two shows @ The Newtown Hotel and a capacity crowd @ Sydney’s The Basement – and it’s not set to slow down yet with slots just announced for Alice Desert Festival (Sep – Alice Springs), Island Vibe Festival (Oct), and Mullum Music Festival (Nov).
Sketch The Rhyme was conceived by MC and Creative Director, Rapaport, and was developed through a 2 week collaborative workshop season between an assortment esteemed visual artists, freestyle MCs and improvising musicians during the 2008 Underbelly Festival, Carriageworks. The show has gone onto performing at festivals such as Edinburgh Fringe 2011, Woodford Folk Festival 2009 & 2010, Melbourne Fringe 2009 and the Sydney Comedy Festival Great Debate.
