Get On Up is a new initiative that will be travelling around Australia hosting all-ages concerts & workshops. An all ages fundraising concert has been announced on Saturday 14th December 2013 at Expressive Grounds in Palm Beach, featuring inspiring hip hop artists MC Wheels (Sunshine Coast), Stik n Move (Canberra) plus local Gold Coast emcees Christian James (aka Boi Blue), Baden Knight and more.
The event will include 2 stages (live performance stage + DJ stage), a photo booth with sessions for all artists. Refreshments, sausage sizzle and snacks will be available on the day. Money raised on the day will go towards setting up the Get On Up foundation and running costs for the first round of workshops.
An array of hip hop talent from around the country will be performing, including 19yo disabled rapper MC Wheels who released his debut album My Introduction earlier this year. Nathan Tessman aka MC Wheels has been amazing people with his inspiring live performances around Queensland including a guest spot on the main stage of the Sprung Hip Hop festival in 2012.
A documentary Magic Of Life has also just been released, after the Live Life Productions crew followed Nathan on his journey from first tentative forays into recording & performing 4 years ago to the triumphant performance at Sprung Festival. The doco shows interviews on The Project and other major TV shows, and footage of Nathan meeting (and skating with) his heroes Hilltop Hoods & Bliss n Eso, along with some of challenges that Nathan faces in day to day life.
Queanbeyan indigenous rappers Stik n Move head up from the ACT for their first Gold Coast show. Stik n Move recently won the 2013 Deadly Award for Most Promising New Talent In Music, and rappers Too Deadly & Whiz have been working on their debut CD to be released next year. ARIA winning producer DJ Danielsan (Koolism) has been working with them in the studio, and now also joins them onstage for their energetic & confronting live performances. A free mix tape is available via their Facebook page, and you can check out the video for the track Tron, which has been getting airplay on hip hop radio shows around the country.
Gold Coaster Christan James (aka Boi Blue) has been making a name for himself spitting some of the fastest raps you will hear on the east coast, and being invited to collaborate with Funk Volume’s SwizZz & Dizzy Wright. Christian has recently been opening on several show on WA’s Mr Grevis album launch tour taking Baden Knight and Codeine Green along for the ride, and has just dropped a new video clip for “Three Amigos” from his forthcoming mixtape release (available for free download February 2014).
The Get On Up event runs from 1pm to 6pm; tickets are $5 in advance or $10 at the door. Earlybird/advance tickets are available here.
Expressive Grounds is a not-for-profit arts collective operating from a council warehouse located at the very end of Tallebudgera Drive, next to the motorway. Some parking is available at the venue, or park at Martin Shield Park and use the footbridge over the river to the venue.
Get On Up is an alcohol and drug free event.
