Spotify recently announced that Nas’ groundbreaking debut album Illmatic will be the next installment of the Landmark series. Spotify Landmark presents the stories behind some of the greatest moments in music, told by the people who made them. In this edition, Landmark will feature Nas, Large Professor (mentor, producer, and collaborator on Illmatic), Faith Newman (Columbia A&R for Nas), Pete Rock (producer and collaborator on Illmatic; member of Pete Rock & CL Smooth), and DJ Premier (acclaimed producer and member of Gang Starr).
Illmatic XX was released on April 15th by SONY Legacy. This exclusive collection features several rare remixes, unreleased demos and freestyles to commemorate the anniversary. Fans can now order the 2CD set on iTunes and both the 2CD set and 1LP vinyl via Amazon.com. Nas has also announced that he will be touring the U.S. and performing the groundbreaking Illmatic from front to back to celebrate the release.
The tour kicked off this recently with special performances at this year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. Nas also attended and performed at the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival following the premiere of Time Is Illmatic, a feature length documentary film that examines the album.
“With Illmatic, I didn’t think about it. I just did it. I believe everybody has good instincts. Now I’m a man from that past and I’m supremely grateful. There’s a Nigerian proverb ‘What is past is prologue’. I’m here today because of Illmatic.” – Nas
Each Spotify Landmark blends intimate interviews with artists, producers, industry figures and celebrities to create a listening history of legendary albums, concerts and events. Landmark launched with “The Real Story of Nirvana’s In Utero” which featured interviews with Krist Novoselic, Steve Albini, Curt Kirkwood, and Bobcat Goldthwait.
