Princes of electronic-pop with a nu-soul bent and Canberra-based overachievers SAFIA have kicked off 2014 in style. Having just announced that they will support Kiwi queen bee Lorde on her Australian tour, the trio are also revelling in the success of their latest single, Paranoia, Ghosts & Other Sounds.
The single hit the #1 spot on Hype Machine, racking up almost 80K Soundcloud plays. Their layered, warm production style and intricate vocal stylings of frontman Benjamin Joseph won hearts instantly, taking out a position in triple J’s hottest 100 and putting the band on the shortlist of acts bound to break out in 2014.
Shared with The Guardian just a few weeks ago, Paranoia, Ghosts & Other Sounds is a soupy blend of digital soul and low slung R&B with unpredictable twists and turns throughout the track. Here the three-piece of Benjamin Joseph, Michael Bell, and Harry Sayers delivers a fresh perspective on understated elegance, with layered textures of warm and crisp production, and a strong cinematic motive. The track drips with the brassy melancholy of front man Benjamin Joseph, who’s melodies rise through the production like a soft mist, embodying a sedate yet tormented character, who is plagued by a twisted and haunting vocal sample.
Today SAFIA shares rising Aussie producer Akouo’s remix of the track. Akouo’s remix is spacey, making the original sound “even more warped than even before.” Akouo’s remix comes as part of a package also including reworks by Paces, Young Franco, and Wordlife, out now.
