Debut solo from Ozi Batla – Wild Colonial (2010)

Ozi Batla is one of Australia’s best known emcees, fronting both The Herd and Astronomy Class. He is best known for penning anthemic tunes such as “77%”, “Starship Troopers” and “A Bright Tomorrow”, sharing credits on “We Can’t Hear You”, “Only 19” and the early Australian hip hop breakthrough “Scallops” in 2003. Renowned for his often politically charged lyrics, he also been involved outside music, through direct activism, fundraising and conducting hip hop workshops for disadvantaged youths in the outback and inner cities. Far from a one-dimensional emcee, his vocal range is as evident live as on record. He is … Continue reading Debut solo from Ozi Batla – Wild Colonial (2010)

Ozi Batla Vs Young Libral (Triple J Hack)

The Herd have officially pulled out of the Coal To Coast Festival after a shit storm of criticism. Ozi Batla appeared on Triple J’s Hack this afternoon defending The Herds position on pulling out of the festival. The band were scheduled to headline the event near Mackay tonight but pulled out at the last minute due to conflicting interests with the coal industry sponsors. How can a band/group come under fire for trying to spread their message to a larger audience. Having grown up in a mining town, I have seen first hand the negative effects that mining has not … Continue reading Ozi Batla Vs Young Libral (Triple J Hack)

The Herd Saga Continues

The Herd have pulled out of the Coal to Coast Festival in Sarina, near Mackay. It’s believed that the Aussie hip-hop group decided not to perform this weekend after fans complained that they were supporting the coal industry and not the environment. Organiser David Gerrand says The Herd were always aware of the involvement of the coal industry. Ozi Batla will be responding to this on Triple J’s Hack tonight. Tune in from 530pm tonight. This story below written by Bianca Clare appeared on the Daily Mercury website, just a short time ago. THOUSANDS of teenagers have been given the … Continue reading The Herd Saga Continues

The Herd Sell Out??? Who you kidding?

An interesting event happened today, and I say interesting as we don’t usually see this type of thing in aussie hip hop. It seems that The Herd have come under fire for accepting to play at an upcoming gig dubbed the Coal To Coast Festival. It seems that the festival’s motives of ‘celebrating the benefits of mining to the community’, have upset some of the more political fans of The Herd. The argument spilled over on to the Elefant Traks website forum and has also had Urthboy twittering madly. As we know some of the views put forward on forums … Continue reading The Herd Sell Out??? Who you kidding?

Elefant Traks – Hacked!

Elefant Traks website is currently down, as Russian super hackers infiltrate the home of Sydney Hip Hop. The top reasons being considered as to why the hackers targeted Elefant Traks are: Russia couldn’t wait for Spitshine’s August 28 release date. Russia was upset for not being invited to Elefant Traks 10th Anniversary Party. Oksana Grigorieva was pissed Mel didn’t set up a free gig for her at Bondi Beach. Continue reading Elefant Traks – Hacked!

Horrorshow – New Single (Thoughtcrime)

Horrorshow are set to release their brand new album, Inside Story, on October 2. Triple J’s Home and Hosed blog, features a little write up on the new drop, we also get a sneak peak at their latest track Thoughtcrime. The first taste of Horrorshow’s forthcoming record is ‘Thoughtcrime‘, replete with the kind of smooth production that characterises a lot of the material produced by Elefant Traks artists: a sound that blends hip-hop rhythms with soul, funk and jazz instrumentation and samples. ‘Thoughtcrime‘ is underpinned by a great backbeat groove, topped off by Solo’s seemingly effortless flow. He reminds me … Continue reading Horrorshow – New Single (Thoughtcrime)
