Death Starrs – Immortal

Death Starrs is a throwback to colourful video stores, puffy VHS jackets, and pays homage to cinema’s greatest movie composers with slick samples, inventive pop culture infused lyrics, and a masterful overtone of well crafted production. Immortal is the brand new track from Death Starrs feat. production from Suffa (Hilltop Hoods). Both artists are no strangers to the aura of success; Syntax’s 2010 debut The Musical was credited with a whole swag of four and five star reviews, and branded the Gold Coast turned Melbourne rapper with a positive stigma as one of Australia’s most notable rap vocalists. As a … Continue reading Death Starrs – Immortal

Death Stars 2011 Wrap Up

Death Stars are Syntax & Mules. 2011 saw the release of a self titled 7 track EP. VHS funk for Star Wars gangsters and Home Alone homies. With samples crafted entirely out of old school movie scores, and raps ranging from George Lucas-inspired metaphors to full blown misogyny, this is an interesting listen to say the least. Death Stars wasn’t an official Soulmate Records project, but one that filled all our hearts with joy. Syntax of course dropped The Musical on Soulmate in 2010 and is a member of In Good Company, who released a self-titled LP last year. Mules the … Continue reading Death Stars 2011 Wrap Up

Syntax – The Musical

Early on in your rap career you were one third of Queensland mainstays Trace Elements –  featuring hip-hop producer  M-Phazes and also emcee Tactic One. Tell us a bit about how that crew came together? Myself and Tactic One were friends in high school, and we met M-Phazes through a mutual friend called Lee who worked at a local record store. He had heard about myself and Tactic through the grapevine and wanted to know if we were interested in meeting his friend M-Phazes. Being new to the whole music thing we were totally interested, and Lee played us a … Continue reading Syntax – The Musical

A-Diction – Walkin’ Alone (August 6)

The name A-Diction says it all; wordplay, cleverness, and an overall obsession with the previous two points. Born and raised in Melbourne, the duo consists of emcee’s Breach and Boltz. Breach, the precise wordsmith with focussed flow and witty punchlines, and Boltz, the crooner known for his explosive debut album The Wishlist, which featured international heavyweight Royce da 5’9” and local producer extraordinaire M-Phazes. Yet, having released a number of well received works (2005’s To be Announced EP; last year’s The Three Year Itch mixtape and more recently the In Good Company mixtape), the group have never released a full … Continue reading A-Diction – Walkin’ Alone (August 6)

Syntax – The Musical (August 23)

Who is Syntax? The name might not immediately ring a bell, but if you’ve been familiar with Australia’s burgeoning hip-hop-scene long enough, you’ve more than likely had subconscious exposure to the Gold Coast veteran’s not inconsiderable talents. With an apprenticeship served as one third of Queensland mainstays Trace Elements – the crew that birthed this country’s most preeminent hip-hop producer, M-Phazes – and time spent on the road with such luminaries as Bliss N Eso, Phrase and US emcee Supastition, there’s no doubt that Syntax has put paid to that old hip-hop notion of “paying dues”. What’s most surprising about … Continue reading Syntax – The Musical (August 23)

HYJACK AND TORCHAS – Back after 5 years

Five years after the release of their debut album Drastik Measures, Sydney-based duo Hyjak N Torcha make their much anticipated return with Gold Coast producer Mules alongside guest production from the likes of Jase and Jetlag. Across 15 introspective tracks, Unregrettable tackles the demons and issues they’ve battled in nearly half a decade, and with it, they’ve found clarity and musical maturity. Buoyed by a new found lyrical urgency and a desire to tackle global issues, Hyjak N Torcha set their sights on empirical tyranny What’s Wrong With the World?, life’s simple escapes, Everyday Escape, and personal reflection (the MURS … Continue reading HYJACK AND TORCHAS – Back after 5 years
