Applications are now open for the 2013 Hilltop Hoods Initiative! The Hilltop Hoods and APRA are teaming up again to give a career changing $10K to the most impressive emerging Hip Hop/Soul act in Australia.   Aimed at helping fund the manufacturing and marketing of an album release, the grant is open to any act that hasn’t had a previous professional commercial release. For application instructions and terms log on here. Applications close on Tuesday 26th February and the grant recipient will be announced on Thursday 28th March. MC Trey lends a hand in Fiji

Hip Hop music will be used to raise awareness on social issues. And Fijian Australian hip-hop artist and community worker Thelma Thomas aka MC Trey has recently volunteered her time to assist members of FemLINKPacific’s Generation Next Project. For five days, MC Trey worked with Generation Next to co-write and produce music around the theme: Enhancing women’s participation for conflict prevention. “I will present free lyric writing, beat-making and digital storytelling workshops for Suva-based young women, on behalf of Fiji Youth Initiative (FYI),” she said in a statement. “A collaborative group song will be created which reflects and comments on social issues. … Continue reading MC Trey lends a hand in Fiji

Urthboy nominated for an Australian Music Award

Sydney artist Urthboy (Elefant Traks) aka Tim Levinson has been nominated to join the shortlist for this year’s Australian music award, The Amps, for his new album, Spitshine. Urthboy, also known for his work with The Herd, worked on the new album with fellow stable mates Hermitude. DJ Debris Wins ARIA for Best Engineering

This year the category of Engineer of the Year rounded out with two equal winners who worked with very different genres of music. Hilltop Hoods member, DJ Debris (Barry Francis) has been recognised for his work on State Of The Art, the follow up to the Hilltop Hoods 2006 ARIA Award winning album, The Hard Road. Children to face jail for carrying a spray can?

An interesting article was posted on the ABC news website a few hours ago here, regarding the new measures  the NSW Government are putting in place in part of a graffiti crackdown. Aussie Hip Hop Artist N’fa Forster-Jones, best know for his work with 1200 Techniques, and also a boyhood friend of Heath Ledger, has released a music video Heath directed shortly before his death. N’fa posted the 3 minute, 31 second-clip for his song Cause An Effect on his YouTube and MySpace pages on Thursday, along with a video in which he explains how the project came about.
