State Ov Mind Lost and Found

Whilst moving house in late 2012 Stateovmind found a collection of unmarked discs buried deep inside a cardboard removalist box. On these discs were four ProTools sessions filled with rough unfinished songs and concepts, all of which were recorded over M-Phazes beats that State had originally acquired in 2007. Stateovmind had long thought that these discs, beat stems and recorded demos were lost forever until this rediscovery. The beats hidden on these discs carried the distinct drums and vintage sound of M-Phazes, and so State decided that they were too good to be left unused and that they should be … Continue reading State Ov Mind Lost and Found

Angel Haze – Battle Cry feat. Sia

If hip-hop’s most central tenet is to keep it real, Angel Haze passes with flying colours. Ever since she first started putting ferocious, cathartic mixtapes online as a teenager, it’s been her raw, unvarnished honesty that has seen her garner such a devoted following.  Last year, Angel Haze surprised fans when she self-leaked her debut album ‘Dirty Gold’ in a dispute with her record label over its delayed release. As a result of the leak ‘Dirty Gold’ which was produced in collaboration with Markus Dravs (Björk, The Arcade Fire and Coldplay), Malay (Frank Ocean) and Mike Dean (Kanye West) was … Continue reading Angel Haze – Battle Cry feat. Apollo Brown Thirty Eight + Australian Tour

Apollo Brown’s Thirty Eight is a contemporary throwback, inhabiting the realm of reverent reinvention and innovation. It deftly bridges the gap between ’70s Blaxploitation soundtracks (e.g. Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly or Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man) and the hip-hop records that sampled from them. The tracks on “Thirty Eight” are presented in gritty, heavily saturated Technicolor, the scratches and cigarette burns as purposeful as they are happily accidental. These are suites sounding from long barrels held by lone men lurking in grimy project hallways. Tinged with revenge and regret, shrouded in thick tendrils of hollow-point smoke, the songs have all the makings … Continue reading Apollo Brown Thirty Eight + Australian Tour
