PURPOSE LOGO

It’s been a massive year for the young South Australian emcee/producer. With 2013 shaping up to be his best yet. Purpose’s brand new album Where It Starts is set to drop in around 5 weeks, with 3 huge singles already out and crunching the airwaves, this is sure to be a massive release.

“This is something I put together for you peeps for checking out my music/sharing it/coming to shows – you are appreciated. I wanted to get in early and give you a song that will make you want to get drunk waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before the party starts haha.

No really. If you have the day off, get amongst it. Huge shout outs to the dudes who’s beats I used on the track – nothin’ but love. I wanted to do something with just Australian Hip-Hop beats this time around just because I think there’s so much quality shit being made that it made sense. Some old, some new – all crazy. It puts a different spin/vibe on the mash-up too. I dig it, hope you do too”. – Purpose

Illy – ‘Where Ya Been’ Official Video

16 08 2012

The second single from Illy’s upcoming third album Bring It Back is Where Ya Been featuring chart-topping contemporary Pez. A playful moment from Bring It Back; Where Ya Been follows previous automatic-hit single Heard It All on an upbeat tip.

With the production expertise of ARIA award-winning M-Phazes, Where Ya Been is not amiss of quality. A head-nodder from the get-go; trademark snapping boom bap and laid back synth chords sets the scene.

Illy and Pez trade flows seamlessly, sympathizing on a subject they’re both all too familiar with. The two make light of the constant pressure for answers, and the eagerness of fans for new material. This is the brand new clip for the track. Director: Nick Kozakis, DOP: Carl Allison, Producers: Vince Bufalino & Dimitrios Psyllos. Writer: Megan Etheve.

Skryptcha – Mindful (Out Now)

9 08 2012

Skryptcha has a knack for making the philosophical non-confrontational. His second masterpiece Mindful is not unlike it’s creator; preceptive, sharp and ahead of its time. After the notoriety surrounding previous LP Numb3rs, and break out EP Left to Write, the slick young wordsmith has found time to knock out a Journalism degree, and travel substantially. Crafted during the most pivotal years of his life, Mindful takes a considered look at Skryptcha’s unique journey thus far.

Mindful’s production was expertly handled by illustrious US producer Illmind, a long-time favourite beat-maker of Skryptcha’s. Throughout the album, a dynamic emcee-producer synchronicity is evident, Illmind setting a scene and Skryptcha telling the story seamlessly. The most comprehensive period of the duo’s artistic interaction took place during Skryptcha’s visit to Illmind’s studio in Brooklyn. An otherwise digital collaboration, the distance between the two proved irrelevant in creating the album the two had envisaged. Using analogue equipment and processes, Illmind’s rich bass lines and homage to old school soul set the tone throughout Mindful.

Lead single, Dance sets the head nodding with its laid-back soulful guitar loops teamed with loose, punchy beats. Skryptcha maneuvers rhythmic rhymes skillfully around the beat, whilst observing music’s power to simplify a person’s circumstance. The hilarious film clip for Dance, featuring Steven O’Donnell (‘Bajo’ from the ABC show Good Game) has just been released. We recommend you check that one out above. Skyryptcha – Mindful is out now through Obese Records.

Obesecity 2

6 08 2012

10 years ago, at a time when Australian hip hop was still struggling to be heard, Obese Records released Obesecity. Invited from all corners of the country, emcees and producers hungry to showcase their skills contributed tracks, unbeknownst of the powerful ripple effect it would create.

Bolstered by the humble independent label, the compilation birthed a generation of hip hop heavyweights, recognised today as the true pioneers of a flourishing industry. Hilltop Hoods, Muph & Plutonic, Bias B, Pegz, the late Hunter and more united to give the growing genre a voice.

To celebrate its anniversary Obese Records is extremely proud to present Obesecity 2. The range of artists featured on the compilation varies both stylistically and geographically. With moments of progressive, electronic production, next to the more traditional sounds of BBQ rap boom bap. Obesecity 2 exhibits the extensive sonic landscape now occupied by the genre.

The diversity noted in the subject matter is reflective of age, circumstance and inclination, laid forth by the nation’s most unconventionally outspoken social conscience. Obesecity 2 is not only an ode to its genre-defining predecessor, but a time capsule, which will undoubtedly be prized for its conviction in this age of mass production and impersonal media.

Obesecity 2 – Track List Revealed

25 07 2012

Obesecity was released 10 years ago when the Aussie hip hop genre was very unpolished and misunderstood. Crews from across Australia had been linking up for shows and various other reasons, but the scene was relatively insular and invisible to mainstream society. What Obesecity and Culture of Kings managed to create, was a unity and strength, which in its exceptional nature forced people to sit up and take notice. Since that point, Australian hip hop hasn’t really looked back. We are now a thriving industry, and part of what defines modern Australia. Obesecity 2, in essence, is about reflecting on all of it, and realising how far we’ve come.” – Pegz
