Seven Local Acts Chosen To Rev Up The Clipsal 500 Adelaide Concert Series

5 02 2013

Music SA is pleased to announce that seven South Australian acts have been selected to open up for some of Australia and the world’s biggest bands at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide Concert Series this March.

PurposeVents

Chosen through Music SA’s Bands on Track 2013 project – a partnership with the SA Motor Sport Board with support from Nova 91.9 and Mix 102.3 – the local acts to perform over three nights on the Clipsal 500 Concert Oval Stage are:

Fri March 1 – Vents & Purpose – supporting Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Illy and Pez
Sat March 2 – Move to Strike & Heston Drop – supporting The Angels & Ian Moss
Sun March 3 – The Beards, Before the Aftermath & The Rules – supporting Kiss & Mötley Crüe

Vents is a unique voice among his peers. His music is an eclectic snapshot of his musings, ranging from a stinging critique of politics, religion and the current economic and social climate, to a heartfelt exploration of his personal struggles. These topics are broached with  aggression, intelligence and humour intending to leave the listener with more questions than answers. Most importantly he not only asks the listener to think, he asks them to think critically. His hard hitting  lyrical content, combined with some of Australia’s finest production, has earned him a place as one of Australia’s most respected MC’s.

Dubbed as “The Future” by Perth powerhouse Drapht, Purpose; the restless yet calculated mind behind the now infamous ‘If the City Had A Voice’ mixtape series, is hardly a new face in the local Hip-Hop scene. With the roots of a freestyle/battle rapper, he represented his city successfully nationwide early on, leading to a coveted spot in the Scribble Jam MC tournament in Cincinnati at 17. In short, Purpose was a wordsmith before he was legal. Already responsible for 7 street releases, both solo & group efforts spanning the last 5 years, Purpose is recognised not only as a rapper, but a killer Producer with a diverse and fresh sound. His brand new LP, Where It Starts is out very soon. Don’t sleep.

More than 100 South Australian acts applied to be considered for this year’s Bands on Track showcase. More info on the project can be found at the Bands On Track website.

Purpose’s single ‘Comin Home’ goes into rotation on triple j & he is named #1 Most Played Artist of 2012 on triple j Unearthed

18 01 2013

It has been a big week for the young MC/producer who is 3 weeks away from delivering his beyond anticipated debut album Where It Starts. Wednesday saw his most recent single Comin Home feat. Illy, Jimmy Nice & Joyride get added to rotation on triple j, a huge feat for an entirely independant artist without label support.

Commin Home

Perhaps the most fascinating and defining detail of Purpose’s recent newfound light is that he has established it by working at a level that has allowed him to keep pace with his peers despite having no backing at all.

The following day triple j Unearthed released their Top 50 Most Played artists of 2012, announcing Purpose as the #1 Highest Played artist of 2012 across all genres! With a long and strong history in the underground and the doors to the industry slowly opening 2013 is set to be an eventful and successful year for Purpose.

Whispers had gotten around on Wednesday that Nova had announced Purpose and Vents as being added to the monster Clipsal 500 line up, and he closed out the week today by taking to social media to confirm this. The event on March 1st will see him perform alongside Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Illy, Pez & Vents in what is sure to be one of the biggest nights in Adelaide entertainment for the year.

Where It Start’s will be available in stores nationally February 8th, 2013.

Maundz – Maundzilla

24 05 2012

Straight out of Melbourne city comes one of the Nation’s most talked about MC’s, Maundz, ready to unleash his highly anticipated sophomore LP titledZero upon the masses. Flying the flag high for the scenes undeniably most hyped up emerging independent force that is Crate Cartel, Maundz is joined by fellow Cartelian and beat smith extraordinaire WIK for the entirety of what is sure to be heralded as one of the country’s slickest hip hop releases to date.

Wik, having proved his skills behind the sp1200 in recent local releases, has collected an eclectic slew of head nodders for and neck snappers for Australia’s most promising up and coming MC to get funky on.

Known for spitting with effortless conviction and a love for all things vernacular orientated, Maundz has yet again delved deep into the A4 to bring his unique and charismatic presence over dirty bass lines, big breaks and dusty samples provided from Wik, all while maintaining the humour and honesty that has earned him nationwide respect.

Tracks such as March The 10th and Slang Rap form vivid storyline’s over Wik’sincomparably smooth production, while Maundzilla paints a much different picture asMaundz gets crafty on some double-time, providing a dark tale of a 100 foot high menace stomping through the city over two Godzilla inspired bangers. Not ones to shy away from topic, Wik and Maundz have shown diversity with a number of different concept tracks throughout album, and have had no qualms about going in on the battle joints which Maundz is prolifically known for.

Zero is littered with a who’s who of hip hop from Australia and abroad, featuring collaborative efforts from New Yorks number one man of the moment Action Bronson, ARIA award winning DraphtGolden Era’s Vents and Sesta, Melbourne kings Brad Strutand Bias B, and of course Crate Cartel. The underlay for these MC’s is a bevvy of live instrumentation complemented with slick samples, the way hip hop should be done. Welcome to the world of Zero, kick off your shoes and relax your socks, Wik andMaundz are out for gusto.

The album has had a lot of live instrumentation go into it to thicken it up to give it more character, and we treated the original samples as the foundation on which to build on. I feel I have some of the best mc’s/dj’s around on this album, plus with Geko behind the boards mixing everything, it’s a no brainer that we’ve put an abundance of thought and care into it…” Maundz

Funkoars – Vamoose

28 04 2012

The Funkoars have dropped a 3rd film clip from their critically acclaimed album The Quickening. Vamoose was produced by Full Clip Productions and features the acting stylings of Benjie McNair of Neighbours fame.

The clip is a biting social commentary on the state of the economy done in true Oars fashion. The video is best summed up by YouTube user KrazyBot:
“Absolutely moving and inspirational clip. The camera roll towards the protagonist creates a sense of desperation within the responder as we watch him try in vain to make enough sandwiches as he is struck by projectiles. Audience members are subject to a cruel disappointment when the protagonist survives only to be shot again. There is a sense of great loss when the antagonists (Funkoars) descend upon his lifeless corpse and take the sandwiches for their own. Brilliance. I am at a loss for words.”

Drawing inspiration from a classic Notorious B.I.G. rhyme and produced by Golden Era Records resident recluse Trials (Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Vents), Vamoose is a one-liner barrage being drunk driven home by Sesta and Hons, smashed into some black market organs, huge guitar stabs and a soul sample fondled to bits by stuntman/DJ Reflux.

Ladies and Gentlemen, VAMOOSE.

Taken from the Funkoars Album The Quickening.  You can catch the Funkoars on their Being Vincent D’onofrio Tour, full dates and ticketing information can be found here.

Clandestien – ‘Weapons Grade’ Out Now

10 04 2012

It’s the return of the chosen ones. Perth’s undisputed Overlords of hardcore; Clandestien, from the mighty Syllabolix Crew, are back in effect. The trio of Tomahawk, Graphic and Mortar have ventured out from the Citadel to once again unleash their trademark darkness upon those who would claim king. They’re back. And this time they’ve bought the whole armoury.

Unlike the groups previous releases such as Dynasty 2004 and Chasms of the Citadel 2007, where production was handled predominately by Mortar, here the sonic weaponry has been deployed by a variety of arms dealers. Suffa of the Hilltop Hoods provides a guitar heavy stomper with Relaxing In Blood. Trials kicks the system into def-con 1 mode with Daydream Of A Killing and Tornts wires up the beat for shock and awe with InTerrorGate. Conseps and Beats lay down heavy covering fire on The Stampede which sees the Clan, AE, Trials and Evolve absolutely smash through the speakers and run wild through your cities blocks taking no prisoners.

With uncompromising lyrics, sharp witted intelligent word play, bomb production and their signature artwork Clandestien have earned a cult status in the minds of many a hip hop aficionado. The timer is set and Weapons Grade is set to explode.

Clandestien – Weapons Grade

20 03 2012

It’s the return of the chosen ones, Perth’s undisputed overlords of hardcore, Clandestien from the mighty Syllabolix Crew are back in effect. The trio of Tomahawk, Graphic, and Mortar have ventured out from the citadel to once again unleash their trademark darkness upon those who would claim king.

They’re back, and this time they’ve bought the whole armory. An armory full of weaponry in the form of hip hop at its most razor-sharp. Weapons Grade, the groups forth release, sees the cohort combine their venomous lyrical prowess teamed with a gang of the countries standout bomb manufacturers to conjure up eighteen tracks of raw firepower.
Clandestien again display a depth of skill which lies beyond the norm; alongside such esteemed marksmen as Brad Strut featured on ‘The Offensive‘, an onslaught of vicious spiticism. The Funkoars and Vents on ‘Daydream of a Killing‘, a foray into the twisted writings of rap’s most heinous. As well as Billy Bunks and Briggs on ‘The Joint‘. Other appearances also include Ciecmate, Maggot Mouf and Tornts, Defyre, FlashOne, K21, Motion, Evolve and the un-stoppable Adroit Effusive collective.
The album detonates with ‘Swan Song‘, a track that sees the Syllabolix squad, including the late great Hunter, breach all primary containment barriers and burn through the reactors core in a critical meltdown. Unlike the groups previous releases such as Dynasty (2004) and Chasms of the Citadel (2007), where production was handled predominately by Mortar. Here the sonic weaponry has been deployed by a variety of arms dealers.

With uncompromising lyrics, sharp-witted word play, masterful bomb production, and their signature artwork, Clandestien have cemented themselves a cult-like following in the minds of many a hip-hop aficionado.  The timer has been set, and Weapons Grade is about to explode…
