Urthboy’s Top 8 for 2009

Urthboys Top ummm 8 for 2009. 1. Fashawn – Life as a Shorty Flipping the Inspectah Deck line from C.R.E.A.M, Fashawn gets his autobiographical on in this swinging beat from Exile. I love this tune and this whole album (Boy Meets World), it’s half science and half west coast swaggering street talk – enough so that you can’t peg him into any one scene. I grew up on political rap; NYC bragging rap; gangsta rap; Native Tongues cool shit – so I love hip hop that represents a cross section of these styles. I highly recommend this record (it’s one … Continue reading Urthboy’s Top 8 for 2009

M-Phazes – Good Gracious! New Album (Feb 26)

M-Phazes is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough.  Born and raised in the Gold Coast of Australia and relatively isolated from Hip-Hop culture, M-Phazes has carved a strong niche for himself that has allowed his production to be heard on a global scale. Drawing inspiration from legendary producers such as Battlecat, Pete Rock and the late J-Dilla, M-Phazes has has formulated his own sound over the years that can be defined by soulful melodies coupled with loose, smacking drums. Landing his first U.S. placement in 2005 on Supastition’s “Chain Letters”, M-Phazes has been on a steady climb and … Continue reading M-Phazes – Good Gracious! New Album (Feb 26)

The Creep Team – The Creep St. EP

Comprising of MC’s Agent Remix and Crisis, the Creep Team is the offspring of Melbourne based group Phonic Division. Since their emergence in 2002, Phonic Division gained a reputable fan base distributing 1000 demo CD’s and supporting several international and local acts. The period following their disbandment in 2006 was a time of reflection as far as music was concerned for both Agent Remix and Crisis, focusing more on their lives and the world around them as influence. Not only did they do so to create music but to expand their now limitless vision to run far deeper than any … Continue reading The Creep Team – The Creep St. EP

Requiem – Grassroots Anarchy Review/Interview

Grassroots Anarchy is emcee Requiem’s debut album. It has been described as a brazen revolt against this harsh new environment and an industry that has shunned him; a  molotov cocktail of beats and rhymes, a proverbial middle finger to nay-sayers and corporate giants alike. Requiem has a sociopolitical style littered with urgency and paranoia. Requiem has  created ten ‘recipies’ in his anarchist’s cookbook. Released September this year through Minimal Aesthetics, Grassroots Anarchy shuns the hype, taking up the arms of street journalism. Production on the album features Ciecmate, Doc Felix, Defiant, Pabstrakt and Wizard (UK). The album also features a … Continue reading Requiem – Grassroots Anarchy Review/Interview
